A vacuum leak is rarely prominent enough to disrupt a process, most leaks go unnoticed. From the outside, everything appears normal. Yet within the system, even a small leak may be discreetly altering the economics of the operation by increasing energy consumption, extending pump-down times, and forcing vacuum pumps to work harder. In processes that rely on controlled atmospheres, such as heat treatment, it can also increase gas consumption and allow contaminants to enter.
