Measuring the Invisible: A Novel High-Sensitivity Hydrogen Gas Permeation Platform

Researchers at the University of Oxford have developed a high-sensitivity gaseous hydrogen permeation platform capable of quantifying exceptionally low hydrogen fluxes under controlled pressure and temperature conditions. The Hiden HAL/3F RC 201 PIC quadrupole mass spectrometer provided calibrated, high-sensitivity detection of hydrogen alongside residual gas species such as oxygen, water vapour and nitrogen. The study demonstrated the critical influence of native surface oxides and trace residual oxygen on hydrogen entry into metals, while providing a reproducible methodology for separating surface-controlled effects from intrinsic bulk hydrogen transport.
